If you've heard friends mention "IPTV" at the pub and nodded along, this is for you. IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Instead of receiving channels through an aerial, a satellite dish or a cable box, the channels come to you over your normal broadband connection and you watch them through an app.
How IPTV actually works
A provider such as IPTVLOAD runs servers that stream live channels and on-demand films. When you subscribe (or take the free 24-hour trial), you receive a playlist link — usually called an M3U — or a set of login details. You paste those into an IPTV app on your Firestick, Smart TV, phone or MAG box, and the app builds a channel list and a programme guide just like a normal TV box would.
Because it's all over the internet, there's no engineer visit, no dish and no contract. If you move house, your IPTV moves with you.
What do you need?
- Broadband: about 10 Mbps for Full HD, 25 Mbps or more for 4K. Most UK fibre connections are well above this.
- A device: the cheapest route is an Amazon Firestick, but Samsung and LG Smart TVs, Android boxes, iPhones and MAG boxes all work. See our setup guides.
- An app: IPTV Smarters Pro (free) or TiviMate (small one-off fee) are the UK favourites.
What's the catch?
Quality depends on your provider. Cheap, overloaded services freeze during big matches and vanish after a few months. That's why we always recommend taking a free trial before paying anything: it shows you exactly how the service behaves on your own connection and screen. IPTVLOAD's 24-hour trial includes every channel and the full film library, with no card required.
Is IPTV cheaper than my current setup?
Almost always. IPTVLOAD's 12-month plan works out at $5.33 a month, and the 24-month plan at $4.54, for 18,000+ channels and 13,000+ films. Compare that with the cost of a satellite package plus sports add-ons and the saving is hard to ignore. Full details are on our pricing page.
